18. legend of the galatic heros
The 150-year-long stalemate between the two interstellar superpowers, the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, comes to an end when a new generation of leaders arises: the idealistic military genius Reinhard von Lohengramm, and the FPA's reserved historian, Yang Wenli.
While Reinhard climbs the ranks of the Empire with the aid of his childhood friend, Siegfried Kircheis, he must fight not only the war, but also the remnants of the crumbling Goldenbaum Dynasty in order to free his sister from the Kaiser and unify humanity under one genuine ruler. Meanwhile, on the other side of the galaxy, Yang—a strong supporter of democratic ideals—has to stand firm in his beliefs, despite the struggles of the FPA, and show his pupil, Julian Mintz, that autocracy is not the solution.
As ideologies clash amidst the war's many casualties, the two strategic masterminds must ask themselves what the real reason behind their battle is.
16. The Big O
15. Tenkuu no Escaflowne
13. Mobile Suit Gundam Wing
The story of Gundam Wing begins in the year After Colony 195, with the start of Operation Meteor; five disgruntled scientists' plan for revenge against the tyrannical OZ military organization for their oppression over the space colonies. The operation involves five young boys who have each been chosen and trained by one of the five rogue scientists, then sent to Earth independently in extremely advanced Mobile Suits, one designed by each of the scientists, known as "Gundams". Their mobile suits are called Gundams because they are constructed from a rare and astonishingly durable material known as Gundanium Alloy, which can only be created in outer space.
The five Gundam Pilots — Heero Yuy (pilot of the titular Wing Gundam), Duo Maxwell (pilot of the Deathscythe), Trowa Barton (pilot of the Heavyarms), Quatre Raberba Winner (pilot of the Sandrock), and Chang Wufei (pilot of the Shenlong) — originally have no knowledge of each others' existence. On first meeting any of the other five, each pilot believes the others to be enemy pilots in new OZ mobile suit designs. Once the young pilots realize that they have the same objective of destroying OZ (and in some cases the same mission), they band together to help each other complete their goals.
12. Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Sailor Stars
Like the R Season, SailorStars is divided into two arcs:
The first arc (also filler) solves some conflicts from the SuperS season, and also sees the return of the Outer Senshi, Haruka, Michiru, Setsuna, and Hotaru (now reborn as a child).
The second arc is the actual plot from the manga. Usagi bids farewell to Mamoru, who is going to America to study abroad. In his place comes the Three Lights, an idol trio consisting of three boys, Seiya, Taiki, and Yaten. The new enemy is Galaxia, a woman who desires to rule the entire galaxy by collecting the Star Seeds of humans. Three new Senshi appear, the Sailor Starlights, who also intend to stop Galaxia without Sailormoon's help.
11. Serial Experiments Lain
10. Seihou Bukyou Outlaw Star
This galaxy-hopping adventure features a ragtag space crew on the eponymous ship, Outlaw Star, helmed by feisty outlaw Gene Starwind. It's an action-packed intergalactic treasure hunt for a universal holy grail known as “the galactic leyline”. It also features one of the coolest guns in the universe, Gene’s caster gun.
9. Cardcaptor Sakura
Of all the CLAMP works that were adapted into anime in the 90s, probably the best known was this magical girl entry about Sakura Kinomoto.
After accidentally releasing the powerful Clow Cards from the book that imprisoned their power, Sakura is given the task of recapturing them all. With its own unique (and popular) take on the magical girl genre, it deserves a place on this list of 20 anime from the 90s.
7. Neon Genesis Evangelion
In a post-apocalyptic, alternate future, Earth has been invaded by strange beings known simply as “angels”, and the only way to fight them is with giant mechs called “Evangelions” piloted by adolescent children. It’s a standout title in anime studio Gainax's long and illustrious history which features a sophisticated deconstruction of the mech genre.
6. Dragon Ball Z
Following the original Dragonball made in the 80s, there’s no denying that - while technically released in 1989 - even non-anime fans were aware of “Dragonball Z” in the 90s. In this sequel, the battle for the seven mystical dragon balls serves as a backdrop to Goku and co.`s struggle to protect earth from extraterrestrial threats.
5. Ghost in the Shell 1995
In the year 2029, advances in Cybernetics allow people to replace nearly all of their body parts and organs with robotics. Through these prosthetics, the weak are made strong, and the dying are given new life. Public Security Section 9 of Niihama City (a fictional setting inspired by Hong Kong), a diverse team of AI, cyborgs and unmodified humans, must investigate cases of corruption and terrorism. Major Motoko Kusanagi has full-body prosthetics, owing to a childhood accident. She, her second in command Batou and information specialist Ishikawa have been assigned an important task: to investigate a hacker known only as "The Puppetmaster." But as Motoko and her team discover, things are never so simple.
Ghost in the Shell is a futuristic thriller with intense action scenes mixed with slower artistic sequences and many philosophical questions about one's soul, gender and human identity in such an advanced age of technology.
